The Skilled Worker visa is the primary route for professionals to work in the UK. However, the requirements became significantly stricter in 2024 and 2025. To ensure a successful application, you must follow a specific sequence of steps.
Step 1: Ensure Your Role is Eligible
Not every job qualifies for sponsorship. Before applying, you must check:
- The SOC Code: Every job has a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code. The role must be eligible for the Skilled Worker route (generally RQF Level 6 or above as of 2025).
- The Salary Threshold: For most new applicants in 2026, the minimum general salary threshold is £41,700. However, you must be paid whichever is higher: £41,700 or the “going rate” for your specific SOC code. Note: Lower thresholds (starting around £33,400) may apply if you are a “New Entrant” (e.g., a recent UK graduate) or have a relevant PhD.

Step 2: Secure a Licensed Sponsor
You cannot apply for this visa on your own; you must have a job offer from an employer that holds a valid Sponsor Licence.
-
- Your employer will issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)—this is a digital reference number, not a physical paper certificate.
- The CoS must confirm your salary, your role, and that the employer will sponsor you for a specific duration.
Step 3: Meet the English Language Requirement
As of 8 January 2026, the English language requirement has been raised. New applicants must now prove they meet the CEFR Level B2 (Upper Intermediate) in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
-
- This is an increase from the previous B1 requirement.
- You can meet this by passing an approved SELT test, having a degree taught in English, or being a national of a majority English-speaking country.
Step 4: The Application Process
Applications are made online through the GOV.UK website.
-
- Proving Identity: Most applicants can use the “UK Immigration: ID Check” smartphone app to scan their passport. If the app isn’t an option, you will need to attend a biometric appointment to provide your fingerprints and photo.
- Switching in the UK: You can “switch” to this visa if you are already in the UK on a different visa (like a Student or Graduate visa), provided your current visa isn’t in a restricted category (such as a Visitor or Short-term Student visa).
- Timeline: * Outside the UK: Decisions are usually made within 3 weeks.
- Inside the UK (Switching/Extending): Decisions typically take 8 to 12 weeks, though priority services may be available for an extra fee.
What should you do now?
Checking the “going rate” for your specific job code is the most common place where applications fail.
