UK Visitor Visas
Whether you are coming to the UK for a holiday, to visit family, or for a short-term business trip, the rules for entry have changed. In 2026, the UK operates a “No Permission, No Travel” policy. This means that before you even board your plane, you must have digital permission to enter the UK.
- Do You Need a Visa or an ETA?
The UK now categorizes visitors into two main groups:
- Visa Nationals: If you are from a country like India, Nigeria, or Pakistan, you must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa online before you travel.
- Non-Visa Nationals: If you are from a country that previously didn’t need a visa (like the USA, EU, or Canada), you now must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
- Cost: £16.
- Validity: 2 years (or until your passport expires).
- Requirement: Every traveler, including children and infants, needs their own ETA.
- The End of Visa Stickers (eVisas)
As of 25 February 2026, the Home Office has phased out physical visa “vignettes” (stickers) in passports. Successful applicants now receive an eVisa. Your immigration status is linked digitally to your passport. You must ensure your UKVI account is updated if you get a new passport, or you may be denied boarding.
- Proving You Are a “Genuine Visitor”
The most common reason for a visitor visa refusal is the Home Office not believing you intend to leave the UK. It can be difficult to demonstrate that you are a genuine visas, however there are certain factors that may help this easier to demonstrate. Below we have listed some guidelines that helps to strengthen your application and help to show that you visit is genuine. To succeed, you must demonstrate:
- Strong Ties to Home: Evidence of your job, property, or family responsibilities in your home country.
- Financial Sufficiency: There is no “fixed” amount, but you should show roughly £100–£150 of disposable income per day for your trip.
- Sponsorship: If a family member is hosting you, they must provide 6 months of bank statements and a letter of invitation clearly stating they will cover your costs.
- Permitted Business Activities
The “Business Visit” category is often misunderstood. You cannot take up employment or produce work for a UK company. However, under 2026 rules, you can:
- Attend meetings, conferences, and interviews.
- Negotiate and sign contracts.
- Give a one-off speech (if not for profit).
- Carry out site visits and inspections.
- NEW for 2026: Limited “client-facing” activity is allowed if it is incidental to your overseas job (e.g., advising a UK branch of your company).
What should you do now?
Visitor visa applications are now fully digital, and the scrutiny on “financial parking” (depositing large sums of money just before applying) is at an all-time high.
