Overview

UK Family Visas: Reuniting with Your Loved Ones

The UK offers several routes for family members of British citizens or settled persons (those with ILR) to live in the UK. Because these applications are expensive and document-heavy, getting the evidence right the first time is critical to avoiding a refusal.

1. Spouses, Civil Partners, and Unmarried Partners

If you are married to, or in a long-term relationship (at least 2 years) with a settled person, you can apply for a Partner Visa.

  • Financial Requirement (2026): For most new applicants, the sponsoring partner must earn at least £29,000 per year.

    • Note: Unlike previous years, this amount no longer increases if you have children. It is a flat rate.

    • Savings Alternative: If you don’t meet the income threshold, you can use cash savings. In 2026, the required amount is typically £88,500.

  • English Language: You must meet the CEFR Level A1 standard (speaking and listening) for your first application.

  • Visa Duration:

    • Outside the UK: You are granted 33 months.

    • Inside the UK (Switching): You are granted 30 months.

  • Path to Settlement: After 5 years on this route (two visas), you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

2. Fiancés and Proposed Civil Partners

This visa is for those who intend to marry or enter a civil partnership in the UK within 6 months of arrival.

  • Prohibitions: You cannot work while on a Fiancé visa.

  • The Transition: After the ceremony, you do not need to leave the UK. You can “switch” to a Spouse Visa from within the country to get your 30-month grant and gain the right to work.

  • Requirements: You must meet the same £29,000 financial and A1 English requirements as the Spouse visa.

3. Adult Dependent Relatives (Parents & Grandparents)

This is widely considered the most difficult UK visa to obtain. It is for parents or grandparents who require long-term personal care that is either unavailable or unaffordable in their home country.

  • The “Care” Test: You must prove that the relative cannot perform daily tasks (washing, dressing, cooking) even with the financial help of the UK sponsor.

  • Evidence: This requires extensive medical reports and proof that there is no one else in their home country (family or professional) who can reasonably provide care.

  • Duration: If granted from overseas, the relative usually receives Indefinite Leave to Enter, meaning they have permanent residency from day one.

4. Children

Children can apply to join a parent who is already settled in the UK or who is applying for a family visa at the same time.

  • Sole Responsibility: If only one parent is in the UK, you must prove “Sole Responsibility” (as discussed in your previous article).

  • Age Limit: The child must be under 18 at the time of the initial application. If they turn 18 while in the UK on this visa, they can still apply for ILR later, provided they haven’t started an independent life.

5. Summary of 2026 Fees & Timelines

Visa Category Home Office Fee (Approx) Processing Time (Standard)
Spouse/Partner (Overseas) £1,938 12 Weeks
Spouse/Partner (In-UK) £1,048 8 Weeks
Adult Dependent Relative £3,250 12–24 Weeks

Crucial Tip: You must also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which in 2026 is £1,035 per year for adults. For a typical 2.75-year spouse visa, this adds over £3,100 to your total cost.

What should you do now?
